The Fourth CommandmentThe fourth commandment says, "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (Ex. 20:8-11). The Sabbath day is the first day in the scripture that YHVH set apart for Himself. This commandment is not a very difficult commandment to understand. Unfortunately, today there has been much deception regarding which day our heavenly Father set apart for Himself, but a simple reading of the text makes it very clear. The "seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God" (Ex. 20:10).
Purpose: God gave us the Sabbath day for a reason. This is a day of "rest." We are to cease from our work and rest on the seventh day. The reason God organized His week this way is simple. "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (Ex. 20:11). God set apart the seventh day to match His week of creation. God worked for six days creating everything in heaven and on earth, but on the seventh day God rested from all His work. We are to follow this same pattern in our weekly work schedule. For six days we are to work, but the last day of our week we are to rest from our work. This is a principle God set up for our benefit. The Messiah said, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath" (Mark 2:27-28). God made this provision in the law for our benefit. After six days of work man needs a break. We need some time to rest. God scheduled our weeks accordingly so we can have the rest we need. This is why God's Law is the "perfect law of liberty" (James 1:25). Remember, God started by saying, "I am YHVH thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage" (Ex. 20:2). God brought them out of the house of bondage and to His law that provides liberty. This is the law that removes bondage. Those in bondage, or slavery, work seven days a week and never have the opportunity to rest. God provided that rest by commandment and statute to ensure our freedom. Deception: Although this commandment is very clear and easy to understand, there has been significant deception regarding the Sabbath day. The church has changed YHVH's sabbath day from the seventh day to the first day. This is very unfortunate for the modern church. There is absolutely no scriptural authority to do so. God speaks of Himself, "For I am YHVH, I change not" (Mal. 3:6). This God, who does not change, apparently changed His Sabbath commandment. The truth is God has never changed from the beginning to the end, from Genesis to Revelation. It is His people who have changed, yet somehow we justify that change. One of God's commandments says, "Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you" (Deut. 4:2). We were absolutely forbidden to change God's commandments, but for some reason the church believes this no longer applies. If we do not keep God's commandments, His way, then we are missing out on His blessings. The Apostle Paul said, "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ" (Col. 2:16-17). Among this list is the Sabbath Days. The Sabbath Days are "shadow[s] of things to come." These days picture something in the future. It is important to notice that this is plural. God has several Sabbath days that we are to keep. Each of these Sabbath days and holy days teach us something. The unfortunate thing in today's church is the rejection of practicing these days and the acceptance of other non-biblical holidays. With this rejection, we lose the lesson that we need to learn. Here is a video to help further understand.
Conclusion: This fourth commandment is specifically about YVHV's seventh day sabbath, however, this commandment is also about YHVH's holy days. God's Sabbaths had a purpose in the nation of Israel and should have a purpose in the nation of America as well. These are God's holidays, and they teach His principles to His people. The titles of law that fit under the first commandment are:
